Bottas Opens Up: “I Nearly Quit My Career”

As his future in Formula 1 remains uncertain, Valtteri Bottas reflected on one of the victories that marked a turning point in his career and reignited his motivation for the sport.

After more than 10 years in Formula 1—having started in 2013—and ten wins during his time with Mercedes, Valtteri Bottas is coming to the end of his contract with Stake F1. His future with the Swiss team, soon to be under Audi’s control, and even in Formula 1 in general, remains in question.

Having been settled in Hinwil since 2022, first with Alfa Romeo and then with Stake, Bottas appeared to be in the right place with Audi’s arrival. However, he does not seem to be a priority option for the German manufacturer, although this possibility has not been entirely ruled out. While Nico Hülkenberg has already secured a seat for 2025 with Sauber/Audi, the second seat is still up for grabs.

The number of available seats for 2025 has now been reduced: apart from Sauber/Audi, there are three remaining spots to be filled at VCARB, Mercedes, and Alpine. Bottas is currently facing the prospect of not being on the grid in 2025.

The Impact of Audi’s Acquisition

One of the significant developments impacting Bottas’s career is the impending acquisition of Sauber by Audi. This transition represents a major shift in the team’s dynamics and strategy. Bottas, who has been with the team since 2022, was initially seen as a potentially stable fixture in this evolving environment. Yet, with Audi taking over, Bottas’s role seems to be less certain. The new management might have different priorities and strategies, affecting Bottas’s place within the team.

The Competitive Landscape for 2025

Looking ahead to the 2025 season, the number of available seats in Formula 1 has become increasingly limited. With Sauber/Audi securing one seat for Nico Hülkenberg, Bottas is competing for the remaining spots. Teams such as VCARB, Mercedes, and Alpine still have open positions, but these opportunities are highly contested. Bottas faces tough competition from emerging talents and other experienced drivers who are also vying for these coveted seats.
